In the book Miejsce dla ka\u017cdego. Opowie\u015b\u0107 o \u015bwi\u0119to\u015bci Jana Paw\u0142a II (A Place for Everyone. The Story of the Holiness of John Paul II), published in 2013, and being conversations of Brygida Grysiak with Archbishop Mieczys\u0142aw Mokrzycki, the deputy private secretary of the Holy Father John Paul II, we can read:
\n\u201cArchbishop Mokrzycki saw a real gleam in the eye of John Paul II, when the Pope looked at the Child in the manger in the nativity scene. He always looked at the little Jesus with love. And when he carried Him from the Basilica to the crib, he also did it with great love, and this could be seen staying closer to him. And then, when he was putting the little Jesus on Mary\u2019s knees, it also happened in this way. And when he looked into the crib, it was not only from the children\u2019s curiosity, but just to show us how to look at Jesus\u201d.\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

This is a very important fragment, not only in Opowie\u015b\u0107 o \u015bwi\u0119to\u015bci Jana Paw\u0142a II, mentioned above, but also for our view and experience of the mystery of the Incarnation, this \u2013 as Fr. Jan Twardowski constantly repeated \u2013 \u201cbasic and the most important truth of Christianity\u201d:
\n\u201cGod became man \u2013 the priest-poet said. This is a staggering truth, the deepest and intellectually the most surprising. You cannot understand it or invent it, it had to be revealed. The Incarnation \u2013 together with the Holy Trinity, the Eucharist and the announcement that we will see God face to face \u2013 is one of the few great theological truths\u201d.
\nJohn Paul II was a mystic, what was already revealed in his early poems. In Song of the Hidden God, Karol Wojty\u0142a, then a seminarian, wrote:<\/p>\n

Your memory always meanders
\nback to that morning in winter.
\nFor many years you believed, knew for certain
\nand still you are lost in wonder.
\nBent over a lamp, a sheaf of light in a knot
\nover your head. You look up no more,
\nnot knowing – is he out there, or
\nhere in the depth of closed eyes?<\/p>\n

There, he is there. Only a tremor here,
\nonly words retrieved from nothingness.
\nOh – and a particle still remains
\nof that amazement which will become the essence
\nof eternity.<\/p>\n

(Shores of Silence, 2)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Every word is important here, because the verses above evoke perhaps the most important moment in the life of the future saint. \u201cYour memory always meanders back to\u2026\u201d The author still relives the event, when Christ appeared to him, alive and true, in a particular place and a particular time \u2013 some \u201cwinter morning\u201d. He found the author prepared \u2013 \u201cFor many years you believed, knew for certain\u2026\u201d but \u2013 \u201cstill you are lost in wonder\u201d. It is hard to be otherwise, because the author of this confession reached the transcendent, supernatural reality of \u201cwhat eye has not seen, and ear has not heard, and what has not entered the human heart\u201d (1 Corinthians 2:9).
\nThanks to his faith, the poet lost nothing from this meeting, but retained in himself \u2013 we can it repeat \u2013 \u201ca particle\u2026 of that amazement which will become the essence of eternity\u201d. Since then, all the time he was talking about the amazement, even about the \u201cgreat wonder\u201d, as in this beautiful passage of the already quoted poem:<\/p>\n

I bring you good news of great wonder, Hellenic masters:
\nit is pointless to watch over existence
\nwhich slips out of our hands,
\nfor there is a Beauty more real
\nconcealed in the living blood.
\n(Shores of Silence,13)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And here there is another fragment of the poem with that key word \u2013 amazement:<\/p>\n

I often think of that day of vision:
\nit will be filled with amazement
\nat the Simplicity
\nthat can hold
\nthe world.
\nAnd the world dwells in it, untouched
\nuntil now, and beyond.<\/p>\n

And then the simple necessity grows
\nto a still greater yearning
\nfor that one day
\nembracing all things
\nwith the immeasurable Simplicity
\nthat love\u2019s breathing can bring.
\n(Shores of Silence,16)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Another passage of the poem leaves no doubt that the most important moments, which can be considered as the source of the human longing for Christ, are children\u2019s experiences related to Christmas that remain within us forever. Hence the \u201cgleam in the eye of John Paul II, when the Pope looked at the Child in the manger in the nativity scene\u201d, so well remembered by Archbishop Mokrzycki, and assertion that John Paul II \u201calways looked at the little Jesus with love\u201d.
\nIn the poem discussed herein we find verses that confirm this moving testimony:<\/p>\n

If, at its greatest, love is simple
\nand desire most simple in yearning,
\nthen no wonder God desired
\nacceptance from simple men,
\ntheir souls made of white,
\nbut no words for their love.
\nThen when He gave us love
\nwrapped in its simple charms \u2013
\nin poverty, poverty and hay,
\nthe Mother took the baby
\nand rocked him in her arms,
\nand in a jerkin tenderly
\nshe tucked his little feet.
\n(Song of the Inexhaustible Sun, 7)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

From a certain perspective, it is impossible to separate the childish delight in the little Jesus, the crib, the manger and the hay from the conscious experiencing of the incomprehensible mystery \u2013 the miracle of the birth of God, who has always been, but for us, for our salvation \u2013 as we say in a prayer \u2013 became man. I am convinced that in the case of St. John Paul II we can speak of a mystical encounter with Christ, alive and true as in the meetings recorded in The Diary of St. Faustina.
\n\u201cFor Christians \u2013 as Bishop Zbigniew Kiernikowski has written \u2013 a turning point within the understanding of mysticism is the incarnation of Jesus Christ\u2026 In the incarnate Word transcendent God became palpable, and so close to man that turned Himself, somehow, subjected to him\u2026 Man\u2019s recognition of this so strongly loving closeness… has the power to put him in contemplation and ecstasy, i.e. going beyond himself to be united with God this way coming to man\u201d.
\nAnd this state is expressed in the poetic verses of Karol Wojty\u0142a:<\/p>\n

Love explained all for me,
\nall was resolved by love,
\nso this love I adore
\nwherever it may be.
\n(Shores of Silence, 5)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

All love is from There and God is love. This truth, coming from the grotto in Bethlehem, overwhelms us just like love of our parents did. This love cannot not exist, it seems to be \u201csince always\u201d. Admiration and adoration with which we are approaching Jesus \u2013 this Love who came into the world \u2013 remains unchanged even when we ceased to be children long ago. A Christmas crib means the beginning of our meetings with God Incarnate. In a similar manner we later experience preparations to the First Communion:<\/p>\n

In a child\u2019s single look
\nfixed on the gentle Host
\nI met the heavenly Father
\nlooking at me with love.
\n(Song of the Inexhaustible Sun, 8)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Not everyone, we must admit, retains that delight in later years. But there are also those who, learning from ever wider experiences, do not lose anything of their childish delight. And hence \u2013 we can repeat once again, returning to the testimony of Archbishop Mokrzycki \u2013 there was that gleam in the eye of John Paul II at the thought of the Creator\u2019s love surrounding us.<\/p>\n
