{"id":2196,"date":"2020-01-25T15:04:40","date_gmt":"2020-01-25T14:04:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jp2doc.pl\/en\/?p=2196"},"modified":"2020-01-25T15:04:41","modified_gmt":"2020-01-25T14:04:41","slug":"the-word-of-god","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jp2doc.pl\/en\/2020\/01\/25\/the-word-of-god\/","title":{"rendered":"The Word of God"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Today is the inaugural Feast of the Word\nof God. This feast was instituted by Pope Francis on September 30.2019, in his\nMotu Proprio <em>Aperuit illis<\/em>. For many\nCatholics, the Word of God is something foreign. \u201cI am a good Catholic\u201d, many\nsay, \u201cI don\u2019t read my bible\u201d. Of course, such a notion is absurd. To be a\nCatholic means to love the Word of God, not to neglect it. In order to love the\nWord of God, however, we must first know what it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Dei\nVerbum<\/em>, the Second Vatican Council\u2019s Dogmatic\nConstitution on Divine Revelation, states that \u201cSacred tradition and Sacred\nScripture form one sacred deposit of the word of God\u201d. In other words,\nScripture and Tradition together form the Word of God &#8211; one cannot exist\nwithout the other. Sacred Scripture requires Sacred Tradition and Sacred\nTradition requires Sacred Scripture. The reason for this relation is simple.\nScripture does not interpret itself, but requires the steady hand of Tradition\nfor proper interpretation. Likewise, Tradition requires the content of\nScripture. Together, they form the Word of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What does this mean for us? First off,\nthe relationship between Scripture and Tradition means that the Word of God is\nfundamentally communal. God has entrusted his Word to the Church, who is\nexclusively entrusted with the task of its authentic interpretation. This does\nnot mean that the Church has the power to manipulate the Word of God, but that\nshe must \u201cserve&#8230;it, teaching only what has been handed on, listening to it\ndevoutly, guarding it scrupulously and explaining it faithfully in accord with\na divine commission and with the help of the Holy Spirit\u201d (DV 10). At the same\ntime, the Word of God speaks to our individual situations. When we read the\nScriptures, God is truly speaking to our present situation. His words to us are\nalways fresh and new. As the author of Hebrews states,<em> the word of God is living and active<\/em> (Hew 4:12). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thus, the Word of God is both ecclesial and personal. It speaks to us in our individual situations, but it also belongs to the Church. In both ways, the Word of God seeks a single purpose, namely, the salvation of souls.
