{"id":2200,"date":"2020-01-31T22:12:27","date_gmt":"2020-01-31T21:12:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jp2doc.pl\/en\/?p=2200"},"modified":"2020-02-01T09:40:31","modified_gmt":"2020-02-01T08:40:31","slug":"bearers-of-the-light","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jp2doc.pl\/en\/2020\/01\/31\/bearers-of-the-light\/","title":{"rendered":"Bearers of the Light"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This Sunday, February 2<sup>nd<\/sup>, is\none of the great feasts of the Christian calendar.&nbsp; The feast we celebrate today goes by many\nnames.&nbsp; In modern times it is most\ncommonly known as the Presentation of the Lord Jesus in the Temple, or the\nfeast of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary.&nbsp; It also bears the traditional name of\nCandlemas.&nbsp; The abundance of names for\nthis great feast fittingly reveals the richness of the celebration, for today many\nwonderful events coincide.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In only 18 verses, St. Luke paints a rich\ntapestry of events that would take several homilies to unpack fully.&nbsp; Today we celebrate Christ\u2019s consecration to\nGod, and are inspired by Mary and Joseph\u2019s humble obedience to the Law of\nGod.&nbsp; But I would like to focus on the\nthird name of today\u2019s feast: Candlemas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We call it Candlemas (Mass of Candles)\nbecause on this day it is traditional to bless candles that will be used in\nboth the liturgy and in private devotion for the coming year.&nbsp; The theme of candles is drawn from the famous\ncanticle that Simeon exclaims upon seeing and holding the Christ child \u2013 the\n\u201clight for revelation to the Gentiles, and for the glory of [God\u2019s] people\nIsrael\u201d (Lk 2:32).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For truly, Christ is the <em>Lumen Gentium<\/em>, the Light of the\nNations.&nbsp; He illumes the dark corners of\nour lives and offers his peace to all peoples.&nbsp;\nWe who know his love are meant to reflect his light by the way we live\nour lives.&nbsp; The feast of Candlemas\ninvites us to consider how well we bear Christ\u2019s light to the world \u2013 a world\nin desperate need of his loving illumination.&nbsp;\nOur models in this are the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Joseph, the first\nbearers of Christ\u2019s light.&nbsp; In humility\nand obedience they offer their whole lives in the service of God, and offer\ntheir Son \u2013 the Son of God \u2013 for the salvation of the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we let Christ into our lives and open\nourselves to the light he wants to impart to us, we cannot help but be\ntransformed.&nbsp; This transformation cannot\nbe static or private.&nbsp; Rather, when Christ\ntransforms us there must be a corresponding commission to witness to the\nmarvels he has worked for us.&nbsp; So let us\nproclaim Christ, the Light of the World, who transforms the darkness of our\nhearts into light, joy, and love.&nbsp; Let us\nwitness to the Light in our own lives, so that by reflecting his rays more\npeople may come to know the peace that only Christ can give.&nbsp; May the whole world cast off the works of\ndarkness and embrace the True Light: Jesus Christ. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Kevin Ponte<\/strong> \u2013 St. Joseph Seminary, Edmonton, Alberta<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Fot.
