The Witness of Hope <\/em>is not only\nthe title of an extensive biography about John Paul II by George Weigel but\nalso an apt summary of the pope\u2019s life. This term was used by the pope himself\nin a speech at the UN headquarters in New York in 1995: \u201cI come before you as a witness: \u2026 a\nwitness to hope, a witness to the conviction that the destiny of all nations\nlies in the hands of a merciful Providence\u201d \u2013 he said then. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hope is an important message that he left to the Church and humanity. It is\na hope for a life worthy of man and for a more human world but also a Christian\nhope for conversion and salvation connected with God\u2019s Providence guiding the\nfate of humanity and with God\u2019s Mercy, to which we entrust ourselves. The pope\nwas convinced that the world would be more human when it became more Godly and\nChristly. This conviction arose from the experience of the dramas that the 20th<\/sup>\ncentury brought and which he witnessed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He Survived to Be a Witness to the Good<\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Karol Wojty\u0142a was born during the Polish-Bolshevik war. On August 15, 1999,\nreferring to his recent visit to the Radzymin military cemetery, he said: \u201cI\nalways think what would be if there had not been this Radzymin, this Miracle on\nthe Vistula. This event, this day, are deeply inscribed in my personal history,\nin the history of all of us\u201d. He considered his growing up in an independent\nhomeland to be a fruit of the dedication of his countrymen and courage of\nsoldiers in 1920, as well as an act of God\u2019s providence. Similarly, the\ndecision to be a priest ripened in him in connection with the experience of the\nhorror of the Nazi occupation. \u201cIn the face of the spread of evil<\/em> and the atrocities\nof the war, the meaning of the priesthood and its mission in the world became\nmuch clearer to me\u201d \u2013 he confessed in the book Gift and Mystery<\/em>. He was aware\nthat he had survived to direct his life and lives of others, \u201cin the context of\nthe great evil\u201d brought by the 20th century, towards the good. He was\nfaithful to this task during his service in communist Poland, maintaining the\nfaith of people subordinated to the ideology of atheism. Also during his\npontificate, as a pope, he brought hope to the oppressed, to a world threatened\nby the Cold War and nuclear extermination. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He demanded the presence of a spiritual and moral dimension in wealthy societies,\nin which the signs of the spread of the civilization of death, excluding the\nweakest, the unborn and the elderly from the \u201cbanquet of life\u201d, were more and\nmore noticeable. He taught that in every situation the measure set for all\nmanifestations of evil is the good, confirmed finally by the death and\nresurrection of Christ. One should always refer to the good, look for it,\ncreate it, multiply it. He showed that following Christ meant \u201ccrossing the\nthreshold of hope\u201d, i.e. enlarging the space of good in everyone\u2019s life, in the\nhistory of people, of the world, and of the Church. He saw the third millennium\nas a call to hope, as a chance for change, to learn lessons from the past, and\nto build a world that would be home to everyone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Threshold of Millennia and the Saving Power of\nthe Gospel<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

He knew that the history of the 20th<\/sup> century, marked by wars,\ntotalitarianisms, divisions, but also by the doubt and despair of many people, by\nthe ideologies of delusion, and by the deification of money, power and egoism,\ncould not threaten the future. Picking up the encyclical Dominum et vivificantem<\/em>,\nor the apostolic letter Tertio millennio adveniente<\/em>, we see how\nmeticulously John Paul II defined areas of the growth of good and of raising\nhope, creating a long-term program of preparations for the Great Jubilee of the\nYear 2000, and at the same time showing the direction of action in the third\nmillennium. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

People\u2019s history is not only a clock of history or pages from a calendar\nfilled with names and events, but also a scene where life goes on and the fight\nof good against evil and grace against sin takes place, in which the future is\nforged. John Paul II pointed to the \u201csaving power of the Gospel\u201d which allows\nus to cross the threshold of millennia, seeing in it \u201cthe threshold of hope\u201d\nbecause Christ is with us. In order not to stumble over the threshold of\nepochs, it is necessary to draw conclusions from what happened, make an\nexamination of conscience, change the current hierarchy of values in order to\nmake the good increase. He explained that the acceptance of the Gospel\u2019s\ndemands meant \u201caffirmation of humanity\u201d and to see its beauty and weakness in\nthe light of God\u2019s power. He emphasized it, among others, in the book Crossing\nthe Threshold of Hope<\/em>. However, in his apostolic letter Novo millennio\nineunte<\/em>, summarizing the Jubilee, he presented the opening millennium as a\nvast ocean on which \u201cwe shall venture, relying on the help of Christ\u201d and on the\npower of the Holy Spirit that comforts us with reliable hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Centenary Is not Only the Anniversary, But Chance<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

We celebrate the centenary of the birth of John\nPaul II during a pandemic. Therefore, many scheduled celebrations have been\npostponed. The coronavirus has reminded us how fragile human life is. We are\nlooking to the future with fear, being afraid of the consequences of the\neconomic crisis. The centenary we are celebrating in these circumstances paradoxically\ncan help to focus more attention on the message of hope left us by Saint John\nPaul II. From his birth throughout his life, despite adversities and dramatic\nevents, he was a witness to hope for the victory of good. The more he remains a\nwitness to hope, the more followers of his mission there are.  The witness to hope is not a sower of cheap\noptimism, but a guardian of faith that, like fire, consumes the sting of evil\nand suffering. The more manifestations of the banalization of evil surround us,\nthe more often human suffering is denied in the public sphere, or the more\nnumerous the cases of despair are, the more we need such witnesses. It is worth\nto live for this task, believing in God\u2019s help. At the end, it is worth quoting\nthe Holy Father\u2019s statement, taken from the book Memory and Identity<\/em>,\nthat thanks to faith in Christ we can open the door of hope in every situation.\n\u201cI live with the conviction that in everything I say and do in connection with\nmy vocation and mission, with my service, something is happening that is not\nonly my initiative. \u2026 Will people draw conclusions from these dramatic\n\u201clessons\u201d history has given them? \u2026 The believer knows that the presence of\nevil is always accompanied by the presence of good, the presence of grace. \u2026 There\nis no evil from which God could not derive greater good. There is no suffering\nthat He could not make the way to Him. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
