{"id":2270,"date":"2020-05-16T21:17:12","date_gmt":"2020-05-16T19:17:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jp2doc.pl\/en\/?p=2270"},"modified":"2020-05-16T21:17:13","modified_gmt":"2020-05-16T19:17:13","slug":"sto-lat-and-the-pope","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jp2doc.pl\/en\/2020\/05\/16\/sto-lat-and-the-pope\/","title":{"rendered":"Sto lat! and the Pope"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>During the pontificate, his countrymen many\ntimes sang to John Paul II a traditional <em>Sto lat!<\/em> (May you live one hundred\nyears!), wishing the Holy Father a long life. How did he react to this?&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Jasna G\u00f3ra in 1979, he said: \u201cI have one remark to what you were singing\nhere a moment ago: <em>Sto lat!<\/em>, you were singing it so many times that I\nthought in my soul: \u201cMay it not come true\u201d. In 1983, on the St. Anne Mountain,\nhe joked: \u201cI have been singing vespers since I was a child, but it was the\nfirst time that I was singing <em>Sto lat!<\/em> during vespers! &#8230; It is a new\nliturgy!\u201d In Wroc\u0142aw in 1997, when a crowd of believers, because of his\nbirthday, sang <em>Sto lat!<\/em>, he replied briefly: \u201cI am still alive\u201d. During\na visit to Radzymin in 1999, he replied hearing <em>Sto <\/em><em>lat!<\/em>: \u201cIt is\nbetter to leave the centenary alone, but &#8230; I am pushing eighty, it is approaching\nand is easily to count: 1920-1999\u201d. During the same pilgrimage in Wadowice, he\nsummed up <em>Sto lat! <\/em>just sung for him: \u201cIt is easier to sing than to\nperform\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pontificate of John Paul II helped to promote Polish <em>Sto lat!<\/em> as a counterpart of English <em>Happy Birthday to You!<\/em>, Spanish <em>Cumplea\u00f1os feliz!<\/em> or Italian<em> Tanti auguri a Te! <\/em>During one of\nthe pilgrimages to the United States, when his compatriots many times sang <em>Sto lat!<\/em>, the pope\njoked: \u201cIf you keep singing this, the Americans will think it is the Polish\nnational anthem\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Singing <em>Sto lat!<\/em>, we wished\nthe Holy Father a long life, hoping that he would be with us as long as\npossible. During his last pilgrimage in 2002, in the course of one of the\nmeetings at the Palace of the Archbishops of Krakow, John Paul II gave these wishes\na theological meaning. &nbsp;After <em>Sto lat! <\/em>was sung, he said,\nreferring to the tradition of meetings with young people at 3 Franciszka\u0144ska\nStreet, initiated in 1979: \u201cAnd Pete, who is standing here, also is 23 years\nolder. We cannot help it. There is only one remedy for that. This is the Lord\nJesus. \u2018<em>I am\nthe resurrection<\/em> and the <em>life\u2019,\nit means \u2013 <\/em>despite old age, despite death \u2013 youth in God. <em>And I wish all of you that. \u2026\u201d<\/em><em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We all pass\njust like this symbolic \u201cPete\u201d. Christ is our support\nand guide to eternity. John Paul II left us at the age of 85, fifteen years\nago. Absent from the body, he remained in the memory of the people and in the\nfaith of the Church that raised him to the glory of the altars, to teach us and\nthe next generations by his example to live with Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A wish of \u201ca hundred years\u201d for the pope is fulfilled on May 18, 2020 and\nechoes the words of the Book of Sirach: \u201cThe number of their days seems great\nif it reaches a hundred years. Like a drop of water from the sea and a grain of\nsand, so are these few years among the days of eternity. That is why the Lord\nis patient with them and pours out his mercy on them. \u2026 Their compassion is for\ntheir neighbor, but the Lord\u2019s compassion reaches all flesh\u201d.
