Marian Jaworski was born in Lw\u00f3w [Lviv] in 1926. He was one of these priests\nwho after the Second World War stayed in Krakow together with Archbishop\nEugeniusz Baziak. He was ordained 1950 in Kalwaria Zebrzydowska, where there\nwas a seminary for seminarians from the Archdiocese of Lviv. He started his\npastoral work in the parish of Basznia Dolna near Lubacz\u00f3w, and then he was\nsent for further studies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Understanding and Serving Faith<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

He finished his theological studies at the Jagiellonian University in 1952 with\nthe doctoral thesis entitled The Development of J\u00f3zef Geyser\u2019s Views on the\nPrinciple of Causality<\/em>. For a year he worked in the parish in\nPoronin. Then he started philosophical studies at the Catholic University in\nLublin (KUL), finishing them with a doctoral dissertation on Aristotelian and\nThomistic Theory<\/em> of the Efficient Cause upon the Background of the Concept of Being<\/em>.\nHe was especially interested in metaphysics, but also in the philosophy of God\nand religion which was confirmed by his habilitation thesis entitled The <\/em>Religious<\/em> Cognition of <\/em>God according to Romano\nGuardini<\/em>,\npresented in 1967 at the Catholic Theological Academy (ATK) in Warsaw. In his\nacademic and research work, he was mostly active at the Pontifical Faculty of\nTheology in Krakow where he was a dean. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After establishing the Pontifical Academy of Theology, he held the office\nof its first rector (1981-1987). In 1984, he was appointed the apostolic\nadministrator of the Archdiocese of Lubacz\u00f3w, that is a part of the territory\nof the Archdiocese of Lviv which remained after the war within Polish borders. After political changes and reactivating the\nactivity of the Catholic Church in the territory of the former USSR, he was\nappointed in 1991 the Latin metropolitan of the Archdiocese of Lviv in Ukraine,\nand started patiently rebuilding the church structures and overcoming conflicts\nand prejudices between religions and rites. Since 1998 he was a cardinal in\npectore<\/em>, revealed and created by John Paul II at the consistory in 2001. He\nretired in 2008 and returned to Krakow where he lived at the Kanonicza\nStreet.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Common Passions<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

With this historic street, leading form the Wawel Hill\ntowards the Main Market Square, memories of the beginning of friendship between\nMarian Jaworski and Karol Wojty\u0142a are connected. Since 1951 they were neighbors\nat the Kanonicza 19 and that gave them an opportunity to talk on philosophical\ntopics. The ministry of an auxiliary bishop and an archbishop of Krakow did not\ndisturb Wojty\u0142a to develop his philosophical and pastoral interests. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It should be emphasized that both of them were also\nconcerned with the quality of higher education in Poland. Both Archbishop\nWojty\u0142a and Father Jaworski were involved in the renewal and creation of\ntheological faculties in the period before Wojtyla\u2019s pontificate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It also should be mentioned that in 1967, Father Jaworski\nhad an accident while riding on a train to replace Archbishop Wojty\u0142a \u2013 who had\ngone to the consistory in connection with his elevation to the cardinal\u2019s\ndignity \u2013 during a priesthood retreat in Olsztyn. As a result of the crash,\nFather Jaworski lost his left arm. This event strengthened their friendship\neven more.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Person and Act<\/em><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Wojty\u0142a was convinced that freedom of the human person\nshould be based on philosophical foundations available to everyone, regardless\nof their religious beliefs. He meant to show the relationship between the mystery of\nthe person and morality, between anthropology and ethics. Out of this concern,\nthe monography Person and Act<\/em> was born [the first English translation\nwas entitled The Acting Person<\/em>]. Father Jaworski was its first reviewer\nand strongly supported its publication. The discussion surrounding this text was very\nheated. Father Jaworski saw its importance. His research on the subject was largely in\nline with Wojty\u0142a\u2019s inquiries. One of them emphasized the moral experience of\nman and the other the religious experience. They creatively developed Thomistic\nmetaphysics. The aftermath of their talks and discussions is probably also the\nencyclical Veritatis splendor<\/em>, but not only. Traces of this intellectual\ncooperation can be found in other papal documents. In this regard, Cardinal\nJaworski was always very discreet, not claiming to be \u201cthe pope\u2019s adviser\u201d,\nalthough he really played such a role.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Biggest Surprise<\/strong> <\/h5>\n\n\n\n

At the meeting of the Council of the Pontifical Faculty of Theology on 29th<\/sup>\nSeptember, 1978, where Cardinal Wojty\u0142a was present, everyone was shocked by the news of the death\nof John Paul I. Because of this sad event, Father Dean Jaworski expressed his condolences\nto the cardinal. \u201cAlthough life surprises us sometimes, everything has to be\ntaken in a spirit of deep faith\u201d \u2013 the metropolitan replied. After two\nweeks, there was a joyful \u2013 Habemus papam!<\/em> Life still had many more surprises in store\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Faith brings us hope that this biggest surprise awaits us\non the other side as we pass from \u201clife to life\u201d. We trust that Cardinal Marian\nJaworski participates in this surprise. \u201c\u2026 the twilight of life can be seen \u2013 from a Christian\nperspective \u2013 as a \u201cpassage\u201d, a bridge between one life and another, between\nthe fragile and uncertain joy of this earth to that fullness of joy which the\nLord holds in store for his faithful servants\u2026\u201d (John Paul II, Letter to the\nElderly<\/em>).  <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
