{"id":2340,"date":"2020-11-28T11:41:49","date_gmt":"2020-11-28T10:41:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jp2doc.pl\/en\/?p=2340"},"modified":"2020-11-28T11:41:50","modified_gmt":"2020-11-28T10:41:50","slug":"eager-expectation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jp2doc.pl\/en\/2020\/11\/28\/eager-expectation\/","title":{"rendered":"Eager Expectation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Today\u2019s gospel might appear somewhat\nintimidating to us. We are exhorted to \u201ctake heed, watch and pray\u201d lest the\nLord come suddenly and find us asleep (Mark 13:33, 36). This warning from Jesus\nmight even give the impression that the Master will <em>try<\/em> to catch us by\nsurprise, at the moment we are least prepared, and might lead to a sense of\ndread at the idea of the Second Coming. But, as the other readings show us, we\nare not called to the attitude of servants afraid of punishment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first reading, from Isaiah,\nbegins and ends by invoking God as \u201cour Father\u201d (Isa. 63:16b, 64:8), begging\nHim to \u201crend the heavens and come down\u201d (64:1). The psalm pleads for God to\n\u201cStir up your might, and come to save us!\u201d (Ps. 80:2). The third reading speaks\nof waiting for the \u201crevealing of our Lord Jesus Christ; who will sustain you to\nthe end\u201d (1 Cor. 1:7-8) and reminds us that we were \u201ccalled into the fellowship\nof his Son\u201d (1:9).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What do we see in these passages?\nThere are a couple things that stand out. The first is that God is our Father,\nwho has called us beyond servanthood into Sonship; into a relationship of love,\nrather than servile fear. The second, which in many ways follows from the\nfirst, is that the authors of these passages express an eagerness for God\u2019s\ncoming\u2014in fact, they <em>beg<\/em> the Lord to show forth His might. They\nconfidently trust that God\u2019s presence is something to be desired, or better,\nsomething they need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we love God, if we see Him as our\nFather and Jesus as our friend, then there is nothing we should desire more\nthan His full and glorious presence among us. As the pandemic has taught us,\nnothing less than the full presence of a loved one is enough\u2014it is not quite\nthe same to just see their image on a screen or hear their voice. How much\nmore, then, should we desire to see Jesus, who loved us to the point of death,\ncoming in His glory?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today\u2019s gospel should not be seen as\nan exhortation to fearful wariness, keeping watch to avoid getting caught doing\nsomething wrong. A servant who knows that their master is kind and benevolent\ndoes not fear him, but instead desires to please him and welcome him. How much\nless, then, should we fear the return of the one who has made us sons and\ndaughters of God? If children know that their father is returning home after a\nlong absence, do they not desire to stay awake and keep watch for his return?\nAs we enter into the season of Advent, let us strive to enter more deeply into\nthe joyful anticipation of the coming of Our Lord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Andrew Sheedy<\/strong> \u2013 St. Joseph Seminary, Edmonton, Alberta<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Fot.
