{"id":2388,"date":"2021-01-30T16:35:16","date_gmt":"2021-01-30T15:35:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jp2doc.pl\/en\/?p=2388"},"modified":"2021-01-30T16:35:17","modified_gmt":"2021-01-30T15:35:17","slug":"the-fulfillment-of-the-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jp2doc.pl\/en\/2021\/01\/30\/the-fulfillment-of-the-law\/","title":{"rendered":"The Fulfillment of the Law"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Pope Benedict XVI begins his book, <em>Jesus of\nNazareth<\/em>, by discussing the messianic promise made in the Book of\nDeuteronomy. While speaking to the people of Israel, Moses tells them: \u201cThe Lord your God will raise up for you a\nprophet like me from among your own people\u201d (Deut. 18:15). By the end of\nthe Book of Deuteronomy, this prophecy was still unfulfilled, for in the final\nchapter, the author of Deuteronomy states \u201cNever since has there arisen a prophet in Israel like Moses, whom the\nLord knew face to face\u201d (Deut. 34:10).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The location of this final statement is\ntelling. The Pentateuch, which are the first five books of the Bible, was the\nmost important part of Bible during the time of Jesus. These five books, also\nreferred to as the Law, were the lens through which all other Old Testament\nscripture was interpreted. And yet, at the conclusion of the Pentateuch, in the\nfinal chapter of Deuteronomy, we see that the promise of a New Moses is\nunfulfilled. The Law, in other words, has yet to be fully accomplished. Who,\nthen, is this New Moses? To answer this question, we must look at today\u2019s\ngospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>St. Mark tells us that \u201con the sabbath Jesus entered the synagogue and taught\u201d (Mk\n1:21). In 1<sup>st<\/sup> century Judaism, any man who had knowledge of the\nScriptures could teach in a synagogue. The fact that Jesus taught in this\nfashion is therefore not exceptional. However, the content of Jesus\u2019 teaching\nis exceptional. Indeed, those in the synagogue \u201cwere astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having\nauthority\u201d (Mk 1:22). Jesus does not teach as a commentator of the Law,\nbut as an authority. His words \u2013 in themselves \u2013 have power. This power is\nreadily apparent when Jesus rebukes the unclean spirit. \u201cCome out of [that man]\u2026And the unclean\nspirit\u2026came out\u201d (Mk 1:26). This authority to propound on the Law and to\ncommand unclean spirits shows that Jesus is the New Moses, the prophet promised\nin Deuteronomy, <em>who will know the Lord face to face<\/em>. Jesus, however, is\nnot simply a prophet, but the <em>Holy One of God<\/em>. Indeed, Jesus is God\nHimself.
