{"id":2404,"date":"2021-02-28T11:55:50","date_gmt":"2021-02-28T10:55:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jp2doc.pl\/en\/?p=2404"},"modified":"2021-02-28T11:55:51","modified_gmt":"2021-02-28T10:55:51","slug":"transfiguration-on-mount-tabor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jp2doc.pl\/en\/2021\/02\/28\/transfiguration-on-mount-tabor\/","title":{"rendered":"Transfiguration on Mount Tabor"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The <em>Lectionary\nfor Mass<\/em> is the book that contains all of the readings for mass throughout\nthe year. That book\u2019s introduction explains that on all Sundays, the Old\nTestament reading is thematically linked to the Gospel. For example, the Old\nTestament reading for the Christmas Vigil Mass is taken from Isaiah, where the\nprophet announces that God will visit His people: <em>as a bridegroom rejoices\nin his bride so shall your God rejoice in you<\/em> (Is 62:5). The connection\nbetween God visiting His people and Christmas is clear. In today\u2019s readings,\nhowever, the connection is not so clear \u2013 though once properly understood it is\njust as striking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In today\u2019s\nGospel, we have St. Mark\u2019s account of the Transfiguration on Mount Tabor. Jesus\ntakes Peter, James and John up to the mountain top where <em>he was transfigured\nbefore them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no one on earth\ncould bleach them <\/em>(Mk 9:2-3). The Old Testament reading, on the other hand,\nis the account of the Binding of Isaac, where God orders Abraham to sacrifice\nIsaac, his only Son \u2013 but provides a substitutionary ram at the last moment: <em>Abraham\nwent and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son <\/em>(Gn\n22:13). What is the connection between the Transfiguration and the Binding? How\ncan there be harmony between radiant glory and substitutionary sacrifice?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nconnection becomes clear once we understand the symbolism of Isaac\u2019s binding.\nAccording to Origen, an early Church Father, Isaac and the ram are both figures\nof Christ. Isaac represents Christ according to the Spirit, whereas the ram\nrepresents Christ according to the flesh. That is, Isaac represents Christ\u2019s\ndivinity and the ram represents his humanity. Christ dies according to the\nFlesh, but in his divinity he remains incorruptible. The Transfiguration, then,\nreveals Christ as the perfect sacrifice. He is the beloved Son, whom the Father\n<em>handed over for us all<\/em> (Rom 8:32). Yet soon, Christ will climb another\nmountain, carrying the wood of the Cross on His shoulders. He will suffer. He\nwill die. And yet, death cannot hold Him. During this season of Lent, we must\ntake up our cross and follow him.
