{"id":2440,"date":"2021-04-25T13:55:14","date_gmt":"2021-04-25T11:55:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jp2doc.pl\/en\/?p=2440"},"modified":"2021-04-25T13:55:15","modified_gmt":"2021-04-25T11:55:15","slug":"good-shepherd-sunday-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jp2doc.pl\/en\/2021\/04\/25\/good-shepherd-sunday-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Good Shepherd Sunday"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>\u201cAnd there will be one flock, one shepherd\u201d. These are the words that\nJesus speaks to his disciples during his Good Shepherd discourse. One flock and\none shepherd. What does this phrase mean? \u201cOne flock\u201d is a metaphor for a\nphrase that we repeat in the Creed: \u201cI believe in One, Holy, Catholic and\nApostolic Church\u201d. Throughout the history of the Church, there has always been\nschism \u2013 those who willingly break away from the true Flock of Christ. We can\nthink of the Arians in the 4<sup>th<\/sup> century, the Orthodox in the 11<sup>th<\/sup>\ncentury and the various Protestant sects from the 16<sup>th<\/sup> century. All\nof these groups are not equal. Arians, for example, cannot even be considered\nChristians since they denied Christ\u2019s divinity; on the other hand, the Orthodox\nretain valid apostolic succession and sacraments. Nonetheless, none of these\ngroups are in full communion with the One Flock of Christ, that is, the\nCatholic Church. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Lumen Gentium<\/em>, the Second Vatican Council\u2019s Dogmatic\nConstitution on the Church, states that \u201cthe Church of Christ subsists in the\nCatholic Church\u201d. The word <em>subsist<\/em> \u2013 drawn from philosophy \u2013 needs to be\nunderstood properly. To say that the Church of Christ <em>subsists<\/em> in the\nCatholic Church, is to say that the Catholic Church is the <em>actual<\/em> Church\nof Christ. Other separated churches (such as Orthodox churches), while they\npossess some <em>elements<\/em> of the Church, are not the fully actualized Church\nof Christ. Rather, they lack the perfect unity of the Catholic Church and can\nonly achieve this perfect unity by entering into full communion with the\nCatholic Church. Of course, the perfect unity of the Church is not guaranteed\nby her members (ie. us), but by the One Shepherd \u2013 that is, by Christ. Christ,\nwho is the king of the Church, has appointed the Pope to be his \u2018prime\nminister\u2019. This means that the Pope, when he governs the Church, is not acting\nin his own right, but is acting on behalf of Christ. For our part, when we obey\nthe Pope, we are not obeying him <em>per se<\/em>; rather, we are obeying Christ\nwho acts through him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let us therefore prayer for the Catholic Church and for Pope Francis,\nthat Jesus Christ would act through Francis, his minister, and enable him to\nrule the One Church of Christ in righteousness and unity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ian Mahood <\/strong>\u2013 St. Joseph Seminary, Edmonton, Alberta<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Fot.
